Technological advancements in structural engineering have significantly eased the workload of professionals. Structural design software is a powerful tool that allows for complex and detailed analysis in a relatively short time. However, like any powerful tool, misuse can lead to disastrous consequences. I liken giving these tools to a junior engineer without proper supervision and training to providing an assault rifle to a minor: it's a level of irresponsibility that cannot be overlooked.

Common Issues with Structural Design Software
Models Not Representative of Reality
I have often been presented with models that seem correct at first glance. However, upon closer inspection, I find that the model does not accurately represent the structure intended to be designed. This is a severe error because an incorrect model can lead to structurally deficient designs that fail to meet safety and functionality requirements.
Complexity Without Understanding
Another recurring issue is the tendency to create overly complex models from the outset. This approach increases the likelihood of errors and misunderstandings. It is crucial to start with simple models and gradually add complexity as the behavior of the structure is understood. Engineering should follow an iterative and gradual process, not jump straight to the most complex solution.
Reliance on Software Without Fundamental Knowledge
There is an excessive reliance on the results generated by the software, often without a deep understanding of the fundamental principles of structural engineering. Software is a tool that facilitates calculations but does not replace engineering judgment and experience. An engineer must be able to assess whether the software results are reasonable and, if not, identify and correct the errors.
The Importance of Context in Software Selection
I am often asked which is the best structural analysis software I know. I always answer: "It depends on what you need it for." The choice of the right software depends on the type of structure to be modeled, the available resources, and the specific project requirements. In my experience, I have worked with various tools in different engineering firms, and I have rarely had the opportunity to choose which one to use.
I prefer OpenSees for my projects. It is open-source and free, allowing me to allocate more resources to other aspects of my projects. Additionally, its flexibility and capability for advanced analysis make it a robust option for various applications.
Final Thoughts
Knowledge and experience are critical to the effective use of structural design software. Before entrusting junior engineers with complex tasks, we must ensure that they receive proper training and work under the supervision of more experienced engineers. Otherwise, we risk making errors that could have serious consequences.
Technology is a powerful ally, but engineers must use it responsibly and judiciously. Only then can we ensure that our structures are safe, efficient, and durable.
